Season’s Greetings from Beacon Planning!
10 December 2017 | Posted by Jon Burgess and Andy Thompson
Celebrating the successes of 2017!

This year is Beacon’s 10th year of business and has been particularly bountiful as the company and many of our projects have gained public recognition in surveys and awards. Another reason to celebrate at this time of year!

Beacon is now the fourth largest planning consultancy in Cambridge and in the top 50 highest-earning consultancies nationwide.

Many of our projects have won awards this year. Cowan Court at Churchill College was voted the Best New Large Building of 2016 by the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI) in March, and was also, together with the Heong Gallery at Downing College, recognised by the RIBA East Awards this year. We undertook the heritage work on the RIBA Award winning Burnham Market residential development and continue to be involved in the CB1 masterplan for the Cambridge Station area, the redevelopment of which was Highly Commended by the RTPI. The refurbishment of the David Attenborough Building for the University of Cambridge, for which we provided heritage advice during the planning phase, also won the Best Conservation, Alteration or Extension of an Existing Building Award from the CFCI. It has also been great to see the redevelopment of Anstey Hall Farm Barns, a scheme with which we have been involved for many years, completed to such a high standard.

Our teams continue to develop and are delighted to have promoted Ella Murfet and Emma Sharp to Senior Consultants. The Heritage Team was bolstered in September by the arrival of Declan Carroll as Senior Consultant whilst James Rennie, who is working as a Graduate Consultant whilst studying for his MSt in Building History at the University of Cambridge, joined in June.

Next March will see us celebrating Beacon’s 10th birthday with a trip to Amsterdam and the start of many more exciting new projects – hopefully indoors so that we can keep warm! This year, we celebrated our 9th birthday in March with a company trip to Ironbridge and Ludlow. It was wonderful to see this amazing World Heritage Site and we all had great fun travelling back in time and spending our ‘old’ money at the Victorian Town museum at Blists Hill.

As we have done in recent years, in lieu of sending Christmas cards, we have again this year decided to make a charitable donation to Jimmy’s Cambridge. This charity aims to assist homeless individuals with resettlement, regardless of their background. For more information on Jimmy’s, please visit their website:

With best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at Beacon Planning.
