Unanimous committee approval for new student housing on difficult site.

Beacon was appointed as planning and heritage consultants to secure permission for new student housing - a mix of refurbishment of terraces and a new building. The scheme also required the demolition of a 1950s building to create an access and a replacement shop.

To add to the complexity, the site was within a conservation area and adjacent to several listed buildings with several important trees and with archaeological interest.

The proposals were well received by the council’s independent design review panel and despite objections from residents the scheme was approved unanimously by the Planning Committee.

We were subsequently appointed to undertake a photographic and written record of the buildings to be altered or demolished to discharge the building recording condition.

Planning and listed building consent granted in March 2012 and construction completed and building occupied in late 2013. The project was shortlisted for the RIBA East award in 2014.
