Mill Lane Area

Preserving and regenerating Cambridge's historic centre.

In the summer of 2008, Beacon were appointed by Cambridge City Council and the University of Cambridge to prepare a Historic Environment Analysis of the Old Press Site in the Mill Lane area to assist with proposals and policies which would provide part of the evidence base for a Supplementary Planning Document.

The site lies within the Cambridge Historic Core, part of the Central Conservation Area, and a number of the buildings are statutorily listed, including the Pitt Press Building, the original site of Cambridge University Press. A significant number of buildings are also recognised as being of local interest and the site lies near to significant areas of open space from where clear views of the site can be gained. The assessment provides a baseline study of the architectural, historical and townscape significance of the area, its buildings and spaces. It provides a detailed analysis of its setting in the wider historic environment. The report formed part of the evidence supporting the production of formal guidance encouraging the rejuvenation of the area.

Supplementary Planning Document was formally adopted by Cambridge City Council on 12 January 2010.
