The regeneration of the area around Cambridge Station to create a new mixed use quarter for the city.
Andy and Jon have been involved with the redevelopment of the area around Cambridge Station for over 10 years. Since 2004 they have been part of the design team led by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners where they have:
- Given advice on the implications of development on listed buildings and the conservation area.
- Prepared planning and supporting statements for a number of planning and conservation area consent applications, including the conversion of the Mill and Silo and the demolition of the buildings on the former Rank Hovis site.
- Prepared technical chapters for the Environmental Statement and considered the effect of the proposals on the Cambridge skyline.
- Devised the initial Public Art Strategy and secured ‘Project’ funding to appoint a lead artist (David Cotterell).
- Collaborated with other architects, including Rolfe Judd, Chetwoods, Bland Brown and Cole and 5th Studio in the preparation of designs for specific buildings within the area.
Although some elements of this project were undertaken while Andy and Jon were directors at QuBE, Beacon:
- Advised on proposals for the refurbishment of the listed Station Building;
- Provided advice on the detailed design on the creation of a new ‘Station Square’;
- Prepared the justifications for the demolition of unlisted buildings in the Conservation Area; and
- Contributed to Design and Access Statements.
The latest application, comprising a mix of housing (331 dwellings, 1250 student units) offices (55294 sq m) shops and cafes, a polyclinic, workshop space, community facilities, a hotel, the creation of a transport interchange together with car and cycle parking and a major programme of external works, was granted Planning Permission in October 2008 after two years of negotiation and public consultation.
