Marconi Site, chelmsford
The creation of a new mixed use development in the heart of Chelmsford on the site of the Marconi works, the world's first purpose built radio factory.
Initially whilst Directors of QuBE, Jon and Andy were originally commissioned to prepare a detailed assessment of the historic significance of the buildings on the site and to prepare a detailed report to provide the basis for discussion and agreement with the Borough Council about the buildings to be retained.
Subsequently the scope of the works was widened to include:
- Providing advice on the refurbishment of the listed buildings.
- Preparing the justification for the demolition of buildings.
- Leading a small team preparing a Design Code.
- Preparing the technical chapters of the Environmental Statement dealing with heritage and visual impact.
The planning application was lodged in March 2008.
After 18 months of detailed negotiation and design refinement, the Planning and Listed Building Consent applications were submitted in March 2008. Approval for the outline application and detailed works to the Listed Buildings on the site was granted in October 2008 and the detailed design was approved in December 2008.
