Mill Lane / Old Press Site, Cambridge
In the summer of 2008, Beacon were appointed by Cambridge City Council to prepare a Historic Environment Analysis of the Old Press Site in the Mill Lane area of Cambridge in order to assist the development of proposals and policies which would provide part of the evidence base for a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).
The site lies within the Cambridge Historic Core, part of the Central Conservation Area, and a number of the buildings are statutorily listed, including the Pitt Press Building, the original site of Cambridge University Press. A significant number of buildings are also recognized as buildings of local interest and the site lies in close proximity to significant areas of open space that are within the Cambridge Green Belt.
The Assessment provides a baseline study of the architectural, historical and townscape significance of the area and its component buildings and spaces. It provides a detailed analysis of the site within its setting in the wider historic environment and will guide the development strategies adopted in the SPD which will be produced by the City Council and University to guide the future regeneration of the area.
