Norwich City Centre Conservation Area Appraisal
An appraisal and management guidelines covering one of the country’s largest Conservation Areas
In order to undertake a meaningful appraisal of the City Centre, the Conservation Area was split up into thirteen character areas; an appraisal of each was then undertaken with management and enhancement opportunities identified. The Character Areas were defined using a series of criteria which reflect the history of the area, its natural and man-made components, and its past and present uses. Together these criteria defined each Character Area's distinctive townscape and established their significance and value.
The importance of the City Centre as a whole was defined by summarising the issues such as the topography and landscape, history and archaeology, and current and former uses, that have influenced Norwich's form and its buildings. The major landmarks, building materials and types, and public realm details are also identified. The key characteristics of the City Centre are then set out together with policies and guidance to protect them.
Four of the Character Areas in the Northern City Centre area were analysed in greater depth to produce more detailed guidelines for the management and enhancement of the areas to encourage regeneration and sympathetic renewal of the urban fabric.
